The Petitioners desire that so much of the laying out of the whole area, the cost of which is estimated at approximately $24,000, should be undertaken at the outset as can be met by the sum of $20,000 which they are prepared to guarantee.

I propose to have an area of about two acres laid out to begin with and to continue the work as required. This is the policy which has been adopted in the Colonial Cemetery and it has proved satisfactory.

They also desire that the Government should undertake the maintenance of the cemetery, the annual cost of which is estimated at $1,300, exclusive of the wages of sextons, their object being to ensure that the cemetery will be maintained in the same creditable condition as the Colonial Cemetery; and they are prepared to contribute $1,500 per annua for that purpose.

I am of opinion that the project is a deserv- -ing one and I therefore submit for your favourable consideration that the area applied for should be granted on the following
